VoIP Configuration Course

Level: Intermediate Level
Duration: 2 Days

Overview
The move to IP based telephony has been one of the success stories of recent years. But how does VoIP actually operate? What are the different components? How good is the call quality?
VoIP configuration is a demonstration based course designed to explain how VoIP actually works. The course starts with an explanation of the different elements of a VoIP solution (Signalling Servers, Gatekeepers, Media Gateways, Routers, Switches, Endpoints etc.) and then proceeds to consider each of the components in detail.
By the end of the course, delegates will have taken part in the building and configuration of a LAN, WAN and VoIP system.
The intention of the course is not to train engineers but to provide delegates with a detailed understanding of how VoIP actually operates. If you're responsible for voice or data communications and are considering VoIP, this course is ideal for you.
No prior experience of VoIP is required although some background knowledge in either voice comms or data comms would be of benefit.
Content
This course starts by reviewing all of the major aspects of a VoIP solution and how they all operate together. The role and function of call servers, media gateways and endpoints are all explained along with concepts such as remote survivability and resilience. By the end of this section of the course, delegates are able to both identify the different aspects of a VoIP solution and explain how they operate.
The second major area of the course considers the Local Area Network (LAN) and how it needs to be designed and configured to support VoIP. It is the LAN which is likely to be the source of most VoIP quality problems, therefore issues such as Quality of Service (QoS), bandwidth management and design are all covered in detail. For multi-site organisations the Wide Area Network (WAN) is as important as the LAN in maintaining service and the WAN aspects are fully considered.
The third major theme of the course is the design of VoIP networks and this module considers issues such as where the equipment should be located, how many trunks are required, bandwidth requirements, how will power be provided and issues such as security and resilience.
Throughout the course there is also a practical stream which puts each aspect of the course into practice. Delegates have the opportunity to configure a LAN, WAN and VoIP solution within a lab environment. By the end of the course, a fully working VoIP solution is created.
